Restorative Care for Your Body, Mind & Spirit
A gentle, light touch and non-invasive manual treatment approach that works with the body's natural, self-correcting mechanisms. In CranioSacral Therapy, we look at the body as an integrated whole. Its focus is largely upon releasing tension in the craniosacral system (CSS), which consists of the membranes and fluids that surround the brain and spinal cord, which allow the entire body to deeply relax and self-correct. The CSS has the ability to influence every system in the body, such as the musculoskeletal, neurological, immune, digestive, and endocrine systems, etc.. The therapist uses deep listening skills to evaluate imbalances in the CSS in order to detect and release core issues. The treatment focuses on identifying the underlying root cause of dysfunction, rather than simply treating the symptoms.
Your care plan is customized to suit your particular needs and goals. After a brief consultation with your therapist, Courtney, will customize your unique session using one or more therapies , such as CranioSacral Therapy, therapeutic massage or reflexology. Wellness and lifestyle coaching may be offered for additional support to meet your individual needs and goals for optimal health.
In a typical CranioSacral Therapy session, you will relax quietly on a comfortable, padded massage table, fully clothed, with the lights dim, enjoying the sounds of nature or soft instrumenal music to create a setting for tranquility and healing.
During an Integrative Session, you may choose to incorporate massage therapy into your time, then it would be approapriate to dress down to your comfort level. You will remain comfortable underneath a soft sheet and blanket. You will be securely draped throughout the session and only the area being treated will be uncovered.
At the beginning of your session, while you're comfortable on the table, your therapist will begin by gently placing her hands on various parts of your head and body to listen to the rhythm of the fluid that is flowing around your nervous system. Information gathered through this accessment will help your therapist identify the places in the body that are calling for the most support.
By carefully listening with the hands to locate areas of weak fluid flow or tissue motion, your practitioner can trace those areas of weakness through the body to the original source of dysfunction.
Gentle manual techniques are then used to release those problem areas, and improve the form and function of your central nervous system.
A CranioSacral session can last an hour or more. It can be used alone or integrated with therapeutic massage or reflexology to facilitate powerful changes.
What you experience from your own session is highly individual. Each person is unique and may receive significant changes in the first session or it may take multiple sessions before the clients' goals have been reached. Generally, people experience their session as being deeply relaxing, creating feelings of warmth or sometimes gentle pulsing in areas the therapist is working on or the therapeutic sensations may be felt throughout other areas in the body.

CranioSacral Therapy was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician Dr. John E. Upledger. Dr. Upledger worked with a team of anatomists, physiologists, biophysicists, and bioengineers at the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University to test the existence and influence of the craniosacral system. During those research studies, he discovered the function of the craniosacral system and its use in evaluating and treating poorly understood malfunctions of the brain and spinal cord. Later he went on to develop CranioSacral Therapy and other complementary modalities that are now taught worldwide to hands-on healthcare professionals, such as osteopaths, chiropractors, physical therapists and massage therapists through his educational programs.
